If you live in America, you are acutely aware that we are a culture that places a high premium on youthfulness and attractiveness. Being constantly bombarded by advertisements where people are airbrushed within an inch of their life can take its toll. On a conscious level, we know that those images are not even real—bodies have been slimmed down, faces completely reshaped, skin tone altered—and that they are basically computer images based on real people, not photographs.
But, it can still affect us and make us feel unattractive; we continue to strive for something unattainable, a level of perfection that is not real. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look good and be attractive, but we need to work on feeling better about what we have got. Also, you can feel better about how you look without even addressing make-up, clothes and the like. Here are some powerful suggestions.
Practice Good Posture
Good posture is not only beneficial for your body, it is good for the mind too. When we are sitting or standing erect, it makes us feel more confident and self-assured. You are telling your brain you are feeling good about yourself. A study out of Europe found that people who sat tall rather than slouched exuded more confidence.
Treat Your Body Like the Temple That It Is
We take our bodies for granted. They take tons of abuse and still manage to keep on functioning. But, they are temples and deserve to be treated as such. When you make a commitment to taking care of yourself, you will feel better about yourself. You will be less critical. Eat well. Exercise. Reduce mental stress, which affects your physical health.
Focus on What You Like About Yourself
We tend to give our attention to what we do not like; something that is true in all aspects of life, not just our appearance. Our obsession over our imperfections gives us a false sense of how happy we would feel if they were fixed ; trust me, finally getting that six pack or a more even skin tone will not be the key to lasting peace of mind and true happiness. When you focus in on what you like about yourself, you are sending messages to the brain that will release mood-boosting chemicals. The more you can work on feeling better overall, the less you will focus on what you do not like about your physical appearance.
Shallow breathing creates tension in your face that can make it look less attractive. Deep breathing creates a look of greater ease; you will also physically feel more at ease. The more at ease you are, the better you feel about yourself.
Start a Dialogue with Yourself
Everything we do, think and feel is a result of the thoughts we think all day long; very few things in life are fully objective, undisputable fact. Engage in more positive self-talk and you will see that when you change your thoughts, you change your world. Tell yourself how great you are. Remind yourself of all the things you like about yourself, and not just your physical appearance.
Volunteering your time is a great way to shift focus from yourself and your insecurities, problems and anxieties.
Surround Yourself with Good People
Taking in everyone else’s negative junk is a real drag on our energy. It also causes us to focus on our own more. Limit your time with toxic peope.
Focus on the Beauty and Wonder around You
There is so much beauty in this world and the more you connect with it, the more you will see your own. Surround yourself with nature. Connect with animals.
Smile Even if You Do Not Feel Like It
A smiling face is definitely a more attractive face. Smiling sends happy signals to your brain. You will make yourself feel better as well as the people around you.
Focus on Your Inner Beauty
Acknowledge all of your inner beauty, the things that make you a good person. There is so much more to us than what we look like and giving our attention to these things makes us feel more confident and helps us view ourselves in a more positive light.
