Top 10: Funny Comedy Movies of 2010

LeTune June 4, 2010 45

2010 has been a relatively funny year thus far, with quite a few comedies making their mark on the box office. Though some of the year’s funnier titles are admittedly coming out later in the summer, here are the ten funniest movies to be released thus far:

1. Get Him to the Greek

With Jonah Hill and Russell Brand leading the way, Get Him to the Greek succeeds on multiple levels. Directed by the same man who brought you Forgetting Sarah Marshall, this Nicholas Stoller film provides funny performances with a plot that works. It runs on the dry humor of Hill, with plenty of one liners to keep movie quoters afloat for the duration of the summer.

2. MacGruber

The big problem with most comedy films is that they rehash the same tired characters over and over. This film featured Will Forte, Ryan Phillipe and a great performance from Val Kilmer, adding something different in a tried and true comedy world. Though only slapstick humor, MacGruber was funny enough to satisfy audiences.

3. Death at a Funeral

Sometimes a movie’s deficiencies must be overcome by a great cast of actors. Martin Lawrence and Chris Rock qualify and their performance in this movie is what makes it great. The dialogue between Lawrence and Rock is classic, as they become the primary draw in this one.

4. Date Night

Any time Steve Carell is involved, expectations are going to be high. In Date Night, he and Tina Fey played the lead, and produced a moderately funny comedy. Carell himself was able to carry the action, as the plot left something to be desired. Performances from Ray Liotta and Mila Kunis were highly underrated and helped to round out the sophisticated comedy cast.

5. Greenberg

This Ben Stiller flick is a bit more nuanced, as it doesn’t bring the “in your face” comedy style for which he has become famous. Still, he is electric in his role as a down and out New Yorker, and the plot is funny despite hitting home for many viewers in today’s economy.

6. Cop Out

An early February release, Cop Out benefited at the box office from a lack of comedy alternatives. With former SNL funny man Tracey Morgan teaming up with Bruce Willis, there are some moments where the actors’ tension produces the humor. With an uncharacteristically funny performance from Sean William Scott to top things off, Cop Out was as funny as an overdone police movie could be.

7. Our Family Wedding

This film touched on many sensitive themes, including interracial marriages and cultural strife. Still, Forrest Whitaker delivers in his customary way, and Carlos Mencia is there to provide humor on the side. Anyone who has been through a wedding can enjoy the mishaps and hilarity that ensue when the pressure is so high.

8. Diary of a Wimpy Kid

This is a somewhat different comedy attempt, as it is an adaptation from an illustrated work. The work includes some real life adventures that just about anyone can relate to, which makes it especially funny at parts. Zachary Gordon also provides something of a come-out performance.

9. Hot Tub Time Machine

In typical fashion, many of the funniest parts of this movie were shown in the trailer. It was still good enough to produce laughs for a couple of hours, though. The idea behind the movie is somewhat cheesy, but the situations and performances are good enough. A guest appearance by Chevy Chase is what puts this movie over the top.

10. I Love you, Phillip Morris

Jim Carey’s latest film can be called many things, with funny and weird among those things. A racy film about a gay love affair and a con scheme, this one was not as popular at the box office as it should have been. Not surprisingly, it is Carey’s performance that powers this film.

Adam you are a *deleted*, who needs to get a life and a girlfriend and move out of your mothers house…..owned!!!!!!!!

        • HurrDerp August 28, 2011 at 11:22 pm -

The only people who say “owned” are the ones that live with their parents. Also, it took you 7 months to come up with a response. Not really sure that qualifies you as “owning” anything.

          • Genki December 8, 2011 at 12:21 am -

Owned is a slang word[1][2] that originated among 1990s hackers, where it referred to “rooting” or gaining administrative control over someone else’s computer.[3][4]
The term’s original usage was close to that of the traditional meaning of the word “own” – for instance, “I owned the network at MIT” indicated that the speaker had cracked the servers and had the same root-level privileges that the legitimate owner of the servers had. Some more examples are,”I owned you” and,”You got owned”. “Owned”, a later variant, became more common in the late 1990s, as did the more abstract usage referring to any compromised security mechanism. By 1997, “owned” was regularly used in website defacements,[5][6] and it subsequently spread to gaming circles, where it was used to refer to defeat in a game. For example, if a player makes a particularly impressive kill shot or wins a match by an appreciable margin in a multiplayer video game, it is not uncommon for he/she to say “owned” to the loser(s), as a manifestation of victory, a taunt, or provocation. “Ownage” has become a modern equivalent to a “Turkey shoot,” such as an experienced faction verses a beginner or disadvantaged faction. In slang form, Owned is the adjective (He is owned) Owning is the verb (He is totally owning some ass) and Ownage is the noun (Did you see that ownage?)
Owned has now spread beyond computer and gaming contexts and become part of standard slang, and typically follows severe defeat or humiliation, usually in an amusing way or through the dominance of an opposing party.[7] Other variations of the word owned include own3d, 0wn3d, pwned, and pooned,[7] terms which incorporate elements of leetspeak.

Get Him to the Greek: What a funny film.. The hands down, best comedy of 2010.

MacGruber: We all took the piss outta McGyver, no need to point out the obvious.

Death at a Funeral: That had all the comedy you would expect from a ‘This is how the white man sees a black mans life’ film..

Date Night: Didn’t / wont see it.

Greenberg: Thats the plan for tonight :D

    Cop Out: was shite..

Our Family Wedding: “This film touched on many sensitive themes, including interracial marriages and cultural strife” .. sensitive to who? Hicks? Didn’t see it though, just doesn’t seem like a comedy,

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The title and story puts me off, which is daft I know but still…

Hot Tub Time Machine: Think I got one chuckle out of it. I was really expecting a brilliant film too! :(

I Love you, Phillip Morris: Haven’t got round to seeing it yet, but looks good! Maybe not as a comedy but meh. On the list :)

This is just my two cents, if you don’t like em, please let me know!! I love a good rant! :D

  17. Gm Santiago April 26, 2011 at 3:46 pm -

  21. Phoenix September 1, 2011 at 12:47 pm -

Get Him to the Greek and Date Night were the only two funny movies on this list. I know there is good material out there, just need movies and jokes by more the the greats like Ron White or Katt Williams

  22. meaner September 1, 2011 at 3:19 pm -

In my opinion the best film of 2010 is Death at a Funeral and nothing can beat him.

  23. SHankar September 1, 2011 at 9:56 pm -

Of all the list provided here, Death at a funeral is a good movie. I have few others which is not here.

  24. Christine September 12, 2011 at 8:19 pm -

This list is helpful. I will sure try to watch all these movies.

  25. disgruntled October 10, 2011 at 2:16 pm -

It kind’ve disgusts me when Jim Carrey played that role in ‘I love you philip morris’
I lost all respect for him and he’s sure not one of my fav actors anymore…welcome to the sidelines and rotten tomatoes

  26. josh October 10, 2011 at 3:16 pm -

wtf where is STEP BROTHERS AND GROWN UPS. THEY ARE FUNNIER THEN GET HIM TO THE GREEK

  27. Mike November 26, 2011 at 4:38 pm -

Diary of a wimpy kid sucks. What about Step Brothers or Grown Ups?

  28. Noah November 30, 2011 at 12:56 am -

Get Him to the Greek was great. Date Night was good. Cop Out was really funny, and Hot Tub Time Machine was much better than I expected.

The rest… are you kidding me?

MacGruber: A 30 second SNL skit that went 89 minutes 30 seconds too long.

Death At a Funeral: Blatant ripoff from the British original, and not nearly as funny. Typical “black” comedy film.

Our Family Wedding & Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Have no interest in watching either.

Greenberg & I Love You, Phillip Morris: NOT COMEDY MOVIES.

Awful list. You got 3 of the Top 10 right, another one that would be Top 20, and the rest you’re just reaching.

  29. Blink284 December 8, 2011 at 9:50 am -

    Date Night: Awesome

    Hot Tub Time Machine: Super

Get Him To The Greek: Alright

The rest: haven’t seen them (yet).

BUT PLEASE DON’T BELIEVE ANYONE THAT SAYS GET HIM TO THE GREEK IS BETTER THAN DATE NIGHT OR HOT TUB TIME MACHINE IS BAD. THOSE PEOPLE DON’T KNOW SH*T..

    • rickski61 December 25, 2011 at 8:41 pm -

I find these lists useful. They are, as in most “best lists” simply some ones preferances. I am not foolish enough to think that a total stranger is going to have the exact same taste as Me, but they do make great reference to what is out there. I do not have broadcast tv, so mainstream media propaganda doesn’t bombard me with constant hype. The movies I have seen on this list are, in order of preference, Hot Tub Time Machiene. So stupid it’s funny. Love the retro, 80′s music and ski clothing. Throw in a little Chevy Chase, not bad. Comedy, not academy award stuff, but when your in the mood to laugh, good funny sh!t.
Get him to the Greek. Not bad. Funnier than expected. Not worth a big ticket theatre night out, but Netflix or free download off the net, you could do way worse. Which brings me to date night. The cast should have held me with this one. I hold both main characters with very high esteem and recomend everything they have ever done in their career. This movie however was something I paid top dollar to see, brought a date, popcorn etc. I would not give it a bad review as a free movie download or stream, but not something I would even recomend as a .99 cent movie rental. Better to rewatch some of their other work.I believe it is on Netflicks. If you want a laugh, and have seen all the other “ok” comedies on that service, give it a shot, otherwise do as I am about to do. Pick something from this “Top 10″ list that you haven’t seen and give it a shot.

  30. Dia July 17, 2012 at 7:06 am -

The absolute worst list i have ever seen! One of the movies was funny and that was it, the rest were just too slow and retard funny, ie.. not funny! I guess these appeal to americans as they are 10 seconds behind the rest of the world. Shit list, hang your head

  31. Sussex Wedding Photography November 8, 2012 at 5:24 am -

Nice list of funny movies you have shared here but I want to add one more movie into above list, the name of movie is “Pink Panther”. The Pink Panther is a series of comedy films featuring a bumbling French police detective, Inspector Jacques Clouseau. The series began in 1963 with the release of the film of the same name.
