As most of you already know, Disney recently acquired the rights to Lucasfilms. You know what that means; we can expect another Star Wars film to come out within the next few years. There’s some controversy on whether this is a good or bad thing, but regardless it’s bound to happen. In anticipation of the new film let’s take a look back at the original trilogy to the single most popular character of the franchise: Darth Vader. Several of the best moments from the series have come from his epic lines, so let’s pay tribute to his best and most memorable quotes.
“You may dispense with the pleasantries, commander. I am here to put you back on schedule”
Hear it here.
This line does a great job of showcasing Vader’s strict attitude towards his workers. Shortly after arriving on one of his ships, he is greeted and he responds with this cold rebuttal. It helps to remind us that the Empire is indeed corrupt and lets us know exactly what kind of demanding schedule the rebellion is fighting against.
“The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the force”
This line of his shows his distaste for modern technology and his complete confidence the art form of his “ancient” ways. He is jokingly referred to often by his colleagues as: the last follower of an ancient religion. He is all too serious about his practice and the power it wields, while few others do.
“I hope so for your sake, the emperor is not as forgiving as I am”
This shows some of Darth Vader’s cold and dark sense of humor. It also proves a point to his underlings, as he has displayed little patience for failure and has no hesitation to kill. Referring to himself as “forgiving” and placing the Emperor in a more sinister light, he showcases his knowledge of fear as a motivator.
“I am altering the deal, pray I do not alter it any further…”
There is little I can say about this line other than the fact that it’s just plain cool. Vader in his assertiveness bends the terms of his agreement with Lando, using his all too familiar method of fear as a motivator. Vader cares little for the sake of Lando and the protagonists, focusing only on his own goals. This chillingly cool line has been well received and was even adopted by the comedy show: Robot Chicken in one of their annual Star Wars specials, taking advantage of the fun and downright silly implications of the line.
“You underestimate the power of the dark side”
There are several variations of this line said throughout the saga at various times. It is one of his more recognizable quotes, and is pretty self-explanatory. Really it means exactly what it says: You underestimate the power of the dark side”. No joke, it’s that simple.
“I find your lack of faith disturbing”
Again, this one’s pretty self-explanatory. It’s another really cool line that has been adopted by the internet and implemented in all manner of ways. It is a common catchphrase utilized by all manner of fans for all manner of things, just to sound cooler. It’s also been adopted for use in things such as this:
“Impressive. Most impressive. Obi-Wan has taught you well. You have controlled your fear. Now, release your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me”
And people question why Vader is such a beloved villain. In his fight with Luke, he begins toying with him and attempts to convert him to the dark side, in ways both obvious and subtle. Here he is trying to provoke Luke’s anger, which he knows could easily cause Luke to lose control and send him on the path to the dark side.
“I’ve been waiting for you, Obi-wan. We meet again at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master”
In this scene Darth Vader is made into a much more threatening villain when showing superior skill to his old master. As signified in this line, Vader showcases his power while also killing off a character you’ve grown somewhat close to. It’s also really damn cool, and helped build tension, depth, and conflict to the plot.
“Luke, you can destroy the Emperor. He has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son.”
In one of Vader’s most recognizable lines he shows that even his loyalty is unreliable. After showing earlier dedication to his “master” the Emperor, he shows eager betrayal for the cost of more power. Luke picks up on this and knows that not only is it wrong, but Vader is unreliable and could easily betray him as well. This is just another reason why the infamous battle scene in The Empire Strikes Back remains the most popular in the saga.
“Obi Wan Never told you what happened to your father”
“He told me enough! He told me you killed him!”
“No…I am your father!”
The most famous of Darth Vader’s lines and one of the most misquoted lines in film history, this famous plot twist takes the spot of number one. Even those who are not fans of the series know the line, and anyone can instantly identify with this scene. It is the most famous moment in all of Star Wars and left the fans a moment that would go down in history. This quote is without a doubt #1.
