10. Sky High Bathroom

Offering one of the best views of New York City, this vertigo inducing Bathroom provides breath-taking views of the city. The reason why this bathroom is so exhilarating is the combination of height and the fact that each cubicle has floor to ceiling windows that make you feel like you could fall out of it if you went too close to the edge. Known as the Boom Boom Room, this bathroom is located at the top of the Standard Hotel.

9. Underwater Toilet

For those of you out there who want to make their trip to the bathroom a little bit more entertaining, one of the coolest (and yet bizarre) bathrooms out there is this ‘underwater’ ladies bathroom at Mumin Papa Café in Akashi Japan. Combining your average bathroom experience with an aquarium, one can do their business whilst being surrounded by all manner of sea creatures, from fish to turtles. Why don’t we all have such a thing? At a cost of $270,000, this subaquatic restroom would set you back a fair bit.

8. Kawakawa Bathroom

Designed by Austrian artist Friedensreich Hunderwatwasser, this bathroom is situated in New Zealand, just North of Auckland. Apart from the fact that it was his last piece of work, what makes its design so special is the lack of right angles and its colourful and crazy nature…a true crooked beauty.

7. Transparent Bathroom

This transparent public toilet in Lausanne in Switzerland really is cool. “A transparent Bathroom”, I hear you ask “what’s cool about that?” Well, for starters, it’s not as grim as it sounds; rather it is in fact a technical marvel. At the push of a button, the glass uses electric current to block out the glass, until you are ready to be seen again at the push of another. For the exhibitionists of your out there, you could probably use it without pressing the button. Although, chances are, you may get arrested.

6. One Way Glass Bathroom

Designed by Monica Bonvicini, this bathroom that was aptly described as don’t move a sec was originally situated opposite the Tate in London in 2003. Designed to create an extremely surreal bathroom experience in which you could see out at a 360 degree angle people walking past on the street but they couldn’t see in.

5. Ski Jump Bathroom

On the borderline of cool and bizarre the Ski Jump Bathroom really is something else. Designed by the Japanese Coffee company Goeorgia Max Coffee in order to promote their high energy coffee drinks, this customised bathrooms were situated in ski resorts across Japan. At least there wasn’t real snow in there, as that could have made the experience rather more unpleasant.

4. Glass Floor Elevator Bathroom

This bathroom experience, located in a penthouse in Guadalajara Mexico, would be truly nerve wracking, as only a glass pane separates you from a 15 floor deep disused lift shaft. You would surely only ever use it if you were really desperate. Whatever you do, don’t look down!

3. Columbia Tower Club

Situated on the 76th floor in the tallest building in Washington (and the 20th in all of the USA), this spectacular bathroom delivers panoramic views of the Seattle skyline. Unfortunately these four cubicles are just for women and are private access only. Sorry boys, if you fancy a dramatic bathroom experience, you’re going to have to try another “Cool Bathroom” from this list.

2. Pure Gold Bathroom

A bathroom that lived up to its name in that it truly was…made of pure gold. That’s right, everything. The toilet was gold, the bath was gold, the taps were gold even the bin was gold. Designed by Lam Sai-Wing at the Expo Global Tourist Exhibition Hall in Hong Kong this bathroom was luxury personified. Unfortunately, this bathroom is no more as it was melted down in 2008. It’s probably a good thing though, as magnificent as it was you weren’t allowed to use it. That’s right; the throne of all thrones wasn’t for public use. You could look but you could sit. Golden taps and bathroom sinks which you can’t use? A shame really, if you’re going to spend 38 Million Hong Kong Dollars on a bathroom made from 380kg of gold and 6,200 gemstones, you may as well put it to good use. So then why bother? Well, he was inspired by a quote from Lenin who wanted to honour the communist revolution by building gold toilets. A strange quote and an equally odd inspiration, I cannot help feel that he maybe took this quote a little too literally. Nonetheless, this bathroom hadto make the list and quite possibly if Sai-wing had allowed use of its many functions it could have made it to No 1.

1. Shoji Tabuchi Theatre Restrooms

As Winner of America’s Best Bathroom in 2009, this decadent set of bathrooms at Shoji Tabuchi Theatre are really quite spectacular, paying homage to Japans 1890’s Empire period under Emperor Meiji. The Women’s designed in splendorous purple and filled with Orchids as well stained glass and marble. Between they are undoubtedly two of the world’s most luxurious bathrooms. Both the male and female Tabuchi bathrooms are extremely impressive but the gent’s just pips the ladies through the inclusion of an en suite billiard room. For sheer beauty and majesty, these set of bathrooms had to top the list.
